Japan is well known for its automotive and electronics industries throughout the world. Japan is one of the leading nations in the fields of scientific research, technology, machinery and medical research. The country has the world's third largest budget for research and development at $130 billion and has over 677 731 researchers. Japan has also received the most science Nobel prizes in Asia. The country also has large international corporate industries, such as Fuji, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Sharp, NEC, Epson and Toshiba.

Japan leads the world in robotics, making more than half of the world's industrial robots used for manufacturing.

Japan has also made headway into aerospace research and space exploration. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) conducts space and planetary research, aviation research, and development of rockets and satellites. It has developed a series of rockets, the latest and the most powerful of which is H-IIB.

Japan's top five fields of technology are space technology, automobile and transport technology, medical technology, robot technology and water processing material.

Toyota has developed a new generation of handle-less 'winglets', so you can stand and let the wheels do all the work. Japan is leading the way on tiny cameras that can be inserted into the human body to detect problems before they can spread. Japan has created a filter that can turn sea water into fresh water, which is used in over 40 countries world wide.
